DuPage County approves contracts with lobbyists

DuPage County Procurement Ordinance requires written disclosure prior to award:
Every contractor, union or vendor that is seeking a contract with the county resulting in the aggregate amount or in excess of $25,000 shall provide all political campaign  contributions to any incumbent county board member, county board chairman or countywide elected official whose office the contract to be awarded will benefit with current and previous calendar year contributions.

A contractor that knowingly violates the disclosure requirement is subject to penalties which may include, the immediate cancellation of the contract and possible disbarment from future county contracts.

The Daily Herald - Robert Sanchez reports

Despite the approval of the contracts, board member Elizabeth Chaplin voiced concern about All-Circo and McGuire Woods failing to disclose several campaign donations they had made to board members within the past 12 months.

“The vendors didn’t skip over the item,” she said,  “They wrote none.”

It later was learned that All-Circo in December gave in-kind contribution to Cronin.  It was for transportation valued at $1445.  Also in December, McGuire Woods donated $500 to board member Tonia Khouri.

“Whether they misunderstood the form or disregarding the form, I think it’s an issue”, said Chaplin, adding the county needs a better way of documenting campaign contributions from vendors.

DuPage Hosts Public Hearing Aug. 26 Regarding $18.9 Million in Federal Flood Recovery Funding

DuPage Hosts Public Hearing Aug. 26
Regarding $18.9 Million in Federal Flood Recovery Funding

Wheaton … DuPage County is hosting a public hearing on Tuesday, Aug. 26, to gather the public’s input about an $18.9 million disaster recovery action plan that will be submitted to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
The public hearing will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, at the DuPage County JTK Administration Building, Room 1500-B, 421 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton.
HUD announced in June that DuPage County will receive an additional $18.9 million in disaster relief funds related to the April 2013 flood event that occurred in April 2013. This funding is in addition to the $7 million HUD previously approved for the county related to the same flood event.
The Action Plan is available for public comment at www.dupageco.org/cdbg-dr through Wednesday, Sept. 10. It outlines the multiple flood control projects and a strategic buy-out program for homes prone to flooding.
Highlights of the County’s action plan include:
    ·         $4.5 million to purchase homes in flood prone areas;
    ·         $3.5 million to assist in the construction of the Klein Creek watershed flood control project at Armstrong Park in Carol Stream;  and
    ·         $4.4 million for the West Branch River restoration and flood mitigation project.
The County will submit the Action Plan to HUD by Tuesday, October 7.
The location of the public hearing is accessible to people with disabilities. Anyone who wants to attend the hearing who requires special accommodation for language assistance, hearing impairment, physical or other disability may also call (630) 407-6706 prior to the public hearing to be sure that their needs are met the night of the event.
