Why I am Running For DuPage County Board

My entry into DuPage County politics has evolved as a result of concern not design.
Beginning in July of 2001 when the IEPA told me that my well water was not contaminated and the DuPage County Health Department could not test private wells for Volatile Organic Chemicals I became involved.
Tested by a private company our well water had 3 times the legal limit of TCE and PCE.
I began telling my neighbors about the contamination which led to the formation of the Citizens Advisory Group and investigation by the IEPA and USEPA.  After many meetings and communications with all levels of government from the Village of Downers Grove thru the State over a period of two years approximately 800 homes received Lake Michigan water.
Those two years were filled with many frustrations and difficulties, as well as, countless hours of hard work until our goal was achieved. We were met with major difficulties during this time including: The initial lack of concern by the IEPA, the County Health Department not being able to test private wells, the Village of Downers Grove demanding annexation and the high cost for a safe water supply.  In the end we did receive Lake Michigan water without annexation and without excessive costs.
In addition to safe water we worked to assist Downers Grove in obtaining a grant of $700,000.00 to extend water mains in the unincorporated areas.  We spurred the passage of the Illinois Ground Water Protection Act requiring the State Department of Public Health to notify residents within 60 days of suspected contamination to allow residents wells to be tested.  We also recommended that the DuPage County Health Department test private wells for VOC’s, which the county has done.
In September of 2002 DuPage County Board Chairman Robert Schillerstrom appointed me to the DuPage Water Commission to fill the remainder of a vacant seat.  In June of 2004 I was reappointed to a full term on the board.  During my time on the DuPage Water Commission I never failed to voice my opinion and concerns and go against the majority when necessary.  I was the first DuPage Water Commission member to sound the alarm on the commission’s financial mismanagement.  Later a forensic audit confirmed my warnings and praised me for my efforts.
More recently I worked along with a group of neighbors to defend the integrity of the Downers Grove Gardens neighborhood against a proposed commercial intrusion that would have lowered property values, increases traffic and compromised the safety on neighborhood streets.
My record demonstrates that I take the initiative and work tenaciously to build the broad consensus necessary to achieve results.  I believe that the sharing of information and open communication is necessary for good government.
I realize that being a minority member of the DuPage County Board will not be a picnic.  I am well aware of what to except.  I am also aware that change requires effort.  We only fail if we do not try.
My success in working with prominent people, office holders and organizations at the local, county and state levels provides an established network necessary to continue my efforts for the citizens of District 2 and the entire county.
I will devote my efforts and support those who work for:
  • Rooting out of excessive government spending
  • Preservation of necessary county services for the children, elderly, disabled, veterans and poor
  • The repealing or change of antiquated or obsolete legislation
  • Monitoring and control of the structure of county taxes
  • Introduce a Responsible Bidder Program
  • The establishment and maintenance of sound environmental services
  • Promote economic development serving the best interest of all citizens

Very fortunate to have such great friends and family.  The Kick Off Fundraiser was a huge success, good people, good food and good conversion.  The wait staff at the Brick House Tap and Tavern was excellent.  I am overwhelmed with gratitude at the outpouring of support.   If we keep the momentum going we will be well on our way to winning a seat on the DuPage County Board come November 6, 2012!

    Fundraiser

As your DuPage County Board member I will  decline taxpayer-funded health and pension benefits and  I will seek to abolish such benefits for all County Board members. I also will fight to  halve the salaries paid to members. Further,  I will either decline or donate to charity 50 percent of my after-tax salary for serving on the County Board.

If we eliminate the waste, bloat and insider games now being paid by DuPage County tax dollars, then there will be more than sufficient money to accomplish the core missions of county government without any increase in County tax levels

Good to see our elected officials along with private sector representatives making the case for the Elgin-O'Hare bypass.  This project is vital for economic growth in DuPage County.

DuPage officials push for O’Hare bypass

DuPage County leaders have taken their case for the expanded approach to O’Hare International Airport to Washington, D.C.
Officially known as the Elgin-O’Hare Western Bypass but locally referred to as Western Access, the $3.4 billion project is an alternative multi-modal transportation plan that sprawls across 127 square miles and 27 communities in Cook and DuPage Counties, linking the Elgin-O’Hare Expressway to O’Hare International Airport.
The County Board went on record in support of the extension more than two years ago by adopting a formal resolution.
“Coming out of a national recession, it would be irresponsible not to support Western Access,” said then-chairman Bob Schillerstrom of Naperville. “This is not just a transportation issue, it’s an economic one.”
Current Chairman Dan Cronin, a longtime proponent of the massive capital undertaking who now chairs the Western Access Finance Working Group, called the route a “key priority” for DuPage. He said local officials have been working closely on it with federal lawmakers.
“However, we felt that it was important to meet with them face-to-face to further discuss Western Access,” Cronin said. release. “Our funding request was well received and I believe we are one step closer to making Western Access a reality.”
Accompanying Cronin on the recent 30-hour trip were County Board members Paul Fichtner of Elmhurst, who heads the board’s finance committee, and JR McBride of Glen Ellyn, chairman of the legislative committee. Others in the delegation included Greg Bedalov, CEO and president of Choose DuPage; Kristi Lefleur, executive director of the Illinois Tollway; Hanover Park Mayor Rod Craig; Frank Furco of the DuPage County Building Trades Council; and Ron Lunt of Hamilton Partners.
While there, they met with federal lawmakers or their staff members, including U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.); U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam (R-Wheaton); U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Chicago); U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock (R-Peoria); U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Joliet); U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood; and U.S. Rep. John Mica, (R-Fla.), who serves as chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
Several DuPage County mayors who happened to be in the nation’s capital on other business joined them for some of the meetings.
The Illinois Tollway has pledged to fund $3.1 billion of the project. It has also directed DuPage County and local municipalities to secure the remaining $300 million needed to finish the project. McBride said the county has been working with local municipalities on securing grant funds to help cover the local share.
“Western Access is essential to our region’s economic vitality as it will provide easier access to O’Hare Airport and create hundreds of thousands of jobs,” McBride said.
Fichtner, whose district includes much of the project area, was he was proud of the unified front the visit presented to Washington power brokers.
“They were very optimistic about the project and truly understand just how important Western Access is to our region,” Fichtner said

    Happy 4th of July

Thank you to the Village of Lisle for putting on a great parade.  Had a good time walking with my husband, kids, nieces, nephew, sister-in-law and  the Lisle Township Democrats.  Shook lots of hands.  Passed out candy and literature.  One of the highlights was seeing our local military enjoying the parade and for us to get a chance to thank them for their service.   Ran into some old friends and met some new friends.  Unfortunately did not make it to the Downers Grove parade but hoping it was a success.  Wishing everyone a happy and safe 4th!
