DuPage Convalescent Center Encourages Community

to Send Valentines Wishes to Residents

Wheaton – The DuPage Convalescent Center is offering the community an opportunity to send Valentine wishes to residents who reside at the facility. 

 

Last year, more than 800 heart-shaped helium balloons decorated the corridors and rooms of the Center on Valentine’s Day. Volunteers and staff delivered the balloons to the more than 350 residents living at the Center, brightening the day and bringing lots of smiles along the way. 

 

“We look forward to continuing this tradition again this year,” said Robert Larsen, DuPage County Health and Human Services chairman.  “Every year, Valentine’s Day gives us an additional opportunity to warm the hearts of the many elderly and disabled individuals who live here in our community.” 

 

Balloons will be delivered to residents on Friday, Feb. 13.

 

By making a donation of $3 per balloon, members of the community can help spread cheer to our residents on Valentine’s Day. Donations will be accepted until Thursday, Feb. 12, and may be sent to: DuPage Convalescent Center, Attn: Valentine Balloons, 400 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton, IL  60187.

 

Funds from the sale of balloons will benefit the Resident Recreation Fund, which provides programs and activities to improve the quality of life of residents living at the Center. For more information, please call Linda Gray at (630) 784-4303.

DuPage County Animal Control

Some current and former DuPage County Animal Care and Control staff members and volunteers are voicing concerns with what they called the termination of the agency's veterinary administrator and the county's perceived lack of a plan to ensure the shelter can operate without him.

County officials confirmed last week that Dr. Todd Faraone no longer works there. A county spokesman on Tuesday declined to discuss the reason for Faraone's departure.

Former and current employees and volunteers told county board members Tuesday that the shelter needs help now that Faraone is gone.

DuPage County Announces 2015 Scholarship Program

Wheaton – The DuPage County Department of Community Services is offering college and occupational training scholarships for low-income individuals with high academic potential.

The Community Services Block Grant scholarship supplements the cost of tuition, books, supplies and other school-related items for a semester or a quarter to offset the student’s needs. This scholarship is funded and designed in cooperation with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

Applicants are required to provide proof of DuPage County residency, gross household income for the past 90 days and information about members living in the household. Income for the household must be at or below 125 percent of the federal poverty level. Applicants must also include a 500-word original essay or personal statement, official school transcripts, two letters of recommendation, a Financial Aid Audit (financial aid award letter) and proof of enrollment in an Illinois accredited institution.

Ten $1,000 scholarships are available this year and special consideration is given to students interested in high technology fields or other occupations in emerging fields.

Applications are available at the DuPage County Department of Community Services Office, 421 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton, or online atwww.dupageco.org/CSBG/. Completed applications and support documents must be received by 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 1, 2015.

DuPage County Fair

The organizers of the DuPage County Fair say there is no threat to the continuation of this year's event despite the revelation of more than 300 building code violations on its grounds – at least for now.

The number came from a report released Friday by County Board Chairman Dan Cronin's real estate assessment task force in its assessment of the future use of the property.

The goal of the task force was to evaluate the grounds to make sure they are used to their fullest potential and identify alternatives if necessary.

The violations were declared after Wheaton and county inspectors went through the more than a dozen buildings on the grounds in October, said DuPage County Fair Association Treasurer Jim McGuire.

Raising Awareness of Kawasaki Disease

This year the DuPage County Health Department is joining healthcare partners nationwide to raise public awareness of Kawasaki Disease (KD) on Monday, Jan. 26, when Kawasaki Awareness Day is recognized throughout the United States.

According to the Kawasaki Disease Foundation, an estimated 4,200 children are diagnosed with KD each year. KD is a serious illness that causes an inflammation of blood vessels throughout the body and primarily affects young children under 5 years of age. More importantly, KD is a leading cause of acquired heart disease in children.

Metra Aims to Reach Global Audience in Live Safety Broadcast

Metra for the first time will conduct a live internet video stream of an Operation Lifesaver rail safety training presentation on January 15, at Tinley Park High School. The presentation to students from the school’s Driver Education program will educate young drivers about the dangers of disobeying railroad grade crossing warning devices, describe the consequences of trespassing on a railroad right-of-way and provide other railroad safety tips.

DuPage County will hold a public information meeting regarding the creation of an East Branch DuPage River Watershed Resiliency Plan at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 14, at the Lisle Village Hall, 925 Burlington Ave.

“Parts of the County are still recovering from the effects of the April 2013 flood,” said DuPage County Chairman Dan Cronin. “While we assist in that process, we are also trying to find solutions to make communities more resilient for future floods, blizzards, droughts and other weather stressors.”

In order to better prepare local communities for future extreme weather events, DuPage County is currently creating a resiliency plan for the East Branch Watershed, which encompasses the central portion of DuPage County extending from Addison into Will County. To accomplish this, DuPage County is enlisting the support of local communities to provide information on flooding and quality of life in the area.

During the public meeting, residents and small business owners will have the opportunity to learn more about this planning process, as well as submit ideas and input that may be incorporated into the plan. In addition, an online survey is available.

“The input that we receive from constituents will help us to update our data on both how they were affected by the April 2013 flood and where they would like to see their communities 20 years from now,” added Chairman Cronin.
