Prairie Food Co-op

Would you love a grocery store that:
  • Supports local farms and keeps money in our community?
  • Focuses on freshhealthywholesome food?
  • Serves as an educational resource for healthy living?
  • Is owned by YOU and gives you a VOTE in its decisions?
Then you should become a PRAIRIE FOOD CO-OP FOUNDING OWNER .  I am very excited to be an owner and to support the Prairie Food Co-op.

Why become a Prairie Food Co-op OWNER now?
Because we need Owners BEFORE we can move ahead with a feasibility study to determine the store location and move forward with opening the store. And, by becoming an owner now, YOU help determine where the co-op will be located. The PFC ownership base will have a strong influence on the location of the store.
CaptureThe folks who become owners during PFC’s early development—our ”organizing” phase—are special. Without them, Prairie Food co-op will never open (which is truly unthinkable!)
Recruiting our first 300 owners is a crucial step in proving we have the community support needed to open the store.
Capture2
Our initial Owners Will Play a Crucial Role in Defining Prairie Food Co-op’s Future.
Our initial owners will be the ones who elect Prairie Food Co-op’s first permanent Board of Directors–and will also be the first ones eligible to serve as Board members.
Our initial Owners’ votes will set the direction for Prairie Food Co-op far into the future: our values, our goals, owner benefits, and the products, programs, and services to be offered.

Homelessness and Poverty in DuPage

Normally weekends are family time, going to soccer games, dance competitions or catching up on things that need to be done around the house.  Every once in a while an event comes up that is so important, you miss a game or a competition.  That was this weekend.  This past Saturday DuPage County Board Member Laurie Nowak, District 6, Representative Deb Conroy (D) 46th District and I spent over three hours listening and learning about homelessness and poverty in DuPage County.   Candance King, Executive Director of the DuPage Federation on Human Services Reform has offered to take Laurie Nowak and I on a tour and show us first hand how they are working with the homeless and poor in DuPage.  Looking forward to meeting with Ms. King and sharing the information with the DuPage County Health and Humans Services Committee, of which I am a member.

Nonprofits address homelessness, poverty in DuPage County

DuPage County has a reputation as one of the wealthier areas in Illinois.
However, more than 46,000 of its 930,000 residents are classified as "low income."
Nearly 1,400 are homeless.

These numbers come courtesy of Candace King, executive director of the DuPage Federation on Human Services Reform and one of the presenters at the "Opening Doors for the Homeless: A Christian Response" seminar held Nov. 9 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Villa Park.
King joined Bob Palmer, policy director for Housing Action Illinois, and John Hayner, CEO of Bridge Communities, in discussing low-income residents and homelessness in the county.

The trio addressed nearly 50 people, including a state representative and two County Board members, about what can be done to help those in need.   You can read the full story here.

Happy Veterans Day

The DuPage Veterans Day Ceremony, it was such a moving experience.   All branches of the armed forces were represented,  many frail but not without passion.   The DuPage Veterans Memorial, a beautiful and well deserved tribute to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice.

For those who served, thank you.  For those who lost their lives, no words to express the gratitude.  For those still serving, be safe and thank you.

Election Commission News

The Daily Herald reports Judge strikes down state law on Lake Co. elections

Lake County Board Chairman Aaron Lawlor sued the Illinois state elections board and Foreman to keep Foreman from appointing people to the panel as prescribed by the law. The ruling also permanently enjoins Forman from appointing an elections commission.
“This decision is a big win for Lake County voters and taxpayers. The bottom line is what Springfield did was unconstitutional and demonstrates government at its worst,” Lawlor said in a statement.
“This ruling protects voters’ right to decide who administers elections like every other county in the state and avoid the creation of a new expensive government bureaucracy.”

County clerks plus election boards costs suburbs
It would cost Lake County taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars more to create an election commission mandated by the legislature, mainly in administrative salaries and benefits.  Read the full story here.
Number of  DuPage polling places reduced
As part of an ongoing effort to cut costs, the DuPage Election Commission has approved a plan to eliminate 71 polling places countywide. You can read more here.
The Daily Herald Editorial Board writes Reconsider separate election boards
The cost of a separate county election commission is reason to oppose establishing one in Lake County, a Daily Herald editorial says. In fact, we're also wondering why DuPage County, Aurora and Chicago have separate election commissions. You can read the full Editorial here.
