Don Orseno, a 30-year Metra veteran and former locomotive engineer, was appointed Friday to run the nation's second-largest commuter rail agency, taking over as Metra struggles to overcome a patronage controversy and service-crippling weather.
Metra's interim chief since August, Orseno was the unanimous choice of Metra's 11-member board, which selected him from a field of four candidates after a nationwide search.
Orseno, 59, said one of his first tasks will be "rebuilding the trust" of riders who were inconvenienced by the delays and scores of cancellations that started Jan. 6 with the first round of subzero arctic cold and snow.
